Spotlight on Community Heroes: Lorraine Jones and the Hometown Walk of Hope

For 25 years, Lorraine Jones has poured her heart into helping cancer patients across Obion County. As Co-founder and Executive Director of the Hometown Walk of Hope, Lorraine has built a legacy of compassion, service, and support for those facing one of life’s toughest battles.

A Calling Born from Personal Experience

Lorraine’s passion for cancer care stems from both professional and personal experiences. With a degree in Wellness and Disease Prevention and several family members impacted by cancer, she was inspired to do something meaningful for others. In 1999, she helped launch the Hometown Walk of Hope to meet the urgent needs of local cancer patients.

Meeting Real Needs in Real Time

Unlike many large foundations, Hometown Walk of Hope focuses on direct and immediate support for patients. Whether it's helping pay rent, utilities, medical bills, or prescriptions, the organization provides vital aid when it matters most. Patients can also receive nutritional supplements, gas cards, and borrow items like wheelchairs, wigs, and shower chairs at their office on Perkins Street.

Over the last 24 years, this community-powered effort has raised over $3.8 million through sponsorships, donations, and team fundraisers—all of it going right back into the hands of those who need it most.

Small Acts, Big Impact

Lorraine has seen firsthand how even the smallest acts of kindness can make a world of difference. One moment that stands out was helping a terminal pancreatic cancer patient fulfill a final wish—to taste one of his wife’s homemade biscuits. His oven was broken, so the Walk of Hope paid to have it repaired. “It’s often the little things that matter most,” Lorraine says.

More Than Financial Help

At the heart of the organization is human connection. Many patients visit the office repeatedly during months of treatment. Lorraine and her team offer not only financial support, but also prayer, encouragement, and a shoulder to lean on. The relationships built through the Walk of Hope are rooted in genuine care and community love.

Facing New Challenges Together

After decades of growth, the Hometown Walk of Hope is facing a new challenge: keeping momentum going. Many longtime volunteers and team leaders are aging out, and crowd sizes at fundraising events have decreased, even leading to the discontinuation of their flagship annual walk. But Lorraine remains hopeful.

To breathe new life into the mission, she and her team have launched a “Next Generation” Advisory Council, focused on bringing fresh ideas and new energy into the organization’s fundraising efforts.

How You Can Help

Lorraine has one heartfelt request for the community: “We need Obion County to fall in love with the Hometown Walk of Hope all over again.”

Whether it’s by forming a fundraising team, sponsoring an event, attending car shows or golf tournaments, or simply making a donation—every gesture helps keep this mission alive. Your support brings hope, healing, and dignity to cancer patients across the region.

Thank you, Lorraine Jones, for your vision, leadership, and tireless dedication. Your work continues to shine a bright light in the lives of so many, and you are without a doubt a true Community Hero.
