Spotlight on Community Heroes: Julie Huggins and The Bridge of West TN

For over a decade, Julie Huggins has been a driving force in transforming lives through The Bridge of West TN, Inc. As one of its founders and the Administrator since 2017, Julie has dedicated her work to empowering women, especially single mothers, to overcome life-controlling circumstances and build a brighter future.

A Mission Rooted in Compassion

Julie’s passion for helping women began when she witnessed the struggles of single mothers in her church and community. As her team researched the needs of Obion County, they uncovered a staggering statistic—approximately 60% of adults living at or below the poverty level in Union City are single mothers. This eye-opening reality cemented Julie’s commitment to providing support, encouragement, and vital resources for these women to rise above their challenges and create better lives for themselves and their families.

Changing Lives, One Generation at a Time

One of the most profound impacts of The Bridge’s work is its generational effect. By helping mothers heal and grow, their children also gain the opportunity to thrive. Julie has seen former residents’ children excel in school, sports, and leadership roles—including one young man who became his 8th-grade class president. Every success story, every message of gratitude, and every photo of a Bridge child achieving great things affirms the lasting impact of this ministry on the future of the community.

The Strength of Community Partnerships

Julie finds immense reward in the partnerships The Bridge has built with local organizations, businesses, and churches. These collaborations provide volunteers, donations, referrals, and essential services that help women move “from where they are to where they need to be.” The unwavering support from the community fuels the organization’s mission and ensures that women receive the help they need to succeed.

Tackling Misconceptions About Poverty

One of the biggest challenges Julie and The Bridge face is educating the community about the complexities of material poverty. As she explains, “No one grows up saying, ‘I want to become poor and unable to take care of my family’s basic needs.’” Many individuals living in poverty are not there because of personal choices but due to broken systems and circumstances beyond their control. Julie emphasizes the need for an open-minded approach to poverty alleviation—one that goes beyond the oversimplified belief that people just need a job.

How You Can Support The Bridge

There are several ways the community can help further The Bridge’s mission. Financial donations play a crucial role in sustaining their programs, and opportunities for Julie and her team to speak at local organizations can help spread awareness about best practices in addressing poverty.

Through her leadership at The Bridge, Julie Huggins continues to be a beacon of hope for women and families in West Tennessee. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty make her a true Community Hero.

Thank you, Julie, for your unwavering efforts in empowering women and shaping a brighter future for generations to come!
