During his time as a Marine, he completed two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. These experiences instilled in him a deep sense of purpose and a drive to give back. “Serving my country as a U.S. Marine helped me experience the incredible feeling of being able to give back,” he shares. “It opened my eyes and showed me that there are so many people in the world that aren’t as fortunate as others.”
Chief Yates has been married to his wife, Amber, for 15 years, and together they have two amazing daughters. His family remains a cornerstone of his support system as he navigates the demands of his role.

Before becoming Chief of Police, Chief Yates gained extensive experience in law enforcement. From 2012 to 2020, he served as a Patrolman with the Union City Police Department, earning respect for his dedication to community safety. In 2020, he joined the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) as a Drug Investigator, a role that expanded his expertise and deepened his understanding of the impact of drug abuse on individuals and communities. His return to Union City in December 2021 marked the beginning of his tenure as Chief of Police, bringing his journey full circle.
Transforming Lives Through Compassionate Policing
Chief Yates’s law enforcement career has been marked by a profound impact on individuals struggling with substance abuse. Reflecting on his time as a Drug Investigator, he says, “There is no greater feeling than being approached by a member of our community that was once an active drug addict who wants to thank you for helping turn their life around.” These moments reinforce his belief in the importance of fairness, compassion, and honesty in policing. As Chief of Police, Yates prioritizes hiring officers who share his values. “I have always believed that a Police Officer should be fair, compassionate, honest, and above all, treat everyone the same way you want to be treated,” he emphasizes. This approach has fostered a department culture rooted in integrity and respect.
Challenges and Triumphs
Recruitment remains a challenge for the department in today’s climate. Chief Yates acknowledges the difficulty of finding individuals willing to take on the immense responsibility of police work. However, he is unwavering in his commitment to maintaining high standards: “It takes a very special person to strap on a vest and a badge knowing they may have to sacrifice their own life for a complete stranger.”
Pride in the Community
Chief Yates’s pride in Union City is palpable. Having worked with various agencies across Tennessee, he considers Union City “the greatest place on earth to work.” He attributes this to the unwavering support from the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, business owners, and local residents. “I really couldn’t ask for any better support than we receive already,” he says. “I look forward to serving all of you for many years to come!”

Through his service as a Marine, his work in law enforcement, and his leadership as Chief of Police, Ben Yates has consistently demonstrated a commitment to making a difference.
