The path to Elijah Cavalier’s academic prowess may be easily family-traced. He’s proudly taking his own steps on that journey, though.

Cavalier – a Union City High School senior – has been named as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist after scoring in the top 1 percent of more than 1.5 million students nationwide to take the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). He and other academically talented high school seniors across the county who made the semifinal list are now in competition for more than 76,000 scholarships worth more than $31 million in the 65th annual program.

According to a survey conducted by Destination Analysts, Tennessee was the fifth most visited state during the summer travel season. Additionally, Great Smoky Mountains National Park had year-over-year growth for recreational visits, according to data provided by the National Park Service.

tnAchieves, the non-profit partnering organization to the TN Promise, is in need of volunteer mentors to support local students in the college-going process! Mentors spend about one hour per month reminding students of important deadlines, serving as a trusted college resource, and, most importantly, encouraging students to reach their full potential. Many TN Promise students will be the first in their family to go to college and need just a little extra assistance.
